|The endeavors exerted for a Masonic Lodge on the United States Army Post located in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Establishing a
Lodge was the subject of discussions by several masons stationed there long before the idea to petition the Most Worshipful
Prince Hall Grand Lodge, State of Illinois for permission and the authority to create a Masonic Lodge on the Post. The name of
the Lodge was discussed and it was decided the Lodge should be named in honor of a distinguished brother who had
demonstrated exceptional commitment and services to the Masonic Fraternity. The name selected was none other than the
Honorable Illustrious Sir (Brother) William Scruggs, 33° Grand Inspector General. He was chosen because of his outstanding
reputation as a brother Master, his unwavering respect for the Masonic Order, and his untiring commitments and dedication to
Prince Hall Masonry. In addition, he was recognized for his personal attribute’s, which included caring for others, giving freely of
himself above and beyond the normal call of duty for his family, the professional field of biological sciences, and the institution of
Free and Accepted Prince Hall Masonry.
| The petition was signed on August 28, 1982, by fifteen Free and Accepted Master Masons residing at the Army Post in
Fort Sheridan, to establish a Masonic Lodge on the base and name the Lodge in Honor of Illustrious Sir (Brother) William
Scruggs, 33° Grand Inspector General. The petitioners were: Worshipful Brother Robert Hurt, Master Mason and Past Master
Johnnie Tubbs, Jeffery Blassingame, Darrell C. Smith, Torrance Hogue, Johnnie Foston, James Allen, Winston Jackson, William
Gadberry, William Bailey, Will Brooks, Michael Cowan, Paul Moore, Benjamin Mitchell and Richard Coney. Worshipful
Brother Robert Hurt, Past Master, served as Worshipful Master during the interim period from August 28, 1982 thru October 7,
1982, while pending action by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, State of Illinois and
Its Jurisdictions on the petition dated August 28, 1982, to establish a Masonic Lodge at Fort Sheridan.
|The petition was accepted and signed on October 4, 1982, by Most Worshipful Brother Edward Sykes, 33°, Grand Master, of
the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, State of Illinois and its Jurisdiction, granting authority
and permission for William Scruggs Military Lodge to form and to organize as a UD (Under Dispensation) Lodge at Fort
Sheridan, Illinois. The petition granted permission for those fifteen brothers who signed the original petition, to meet and act in
accordance with the prescribed procedures, Constitution and By-Laws of the Most
|At the first meeting as a UD Lodge, on October 8, 1982, Brother Robert Hurt, Past Master, presided over the election of
officers. The following brothers were elected to serve the respective positions: Worshipful Master, Brother Jonnie B. Tubbs,
Senior Warden, Brother Jeffery Blassingame, Junior Warden, Brother Darrell Smith, Treasurer, Brother Johnnie Foston and
Secretary, Brother Darryl Hogue.
|On October 13, 1983, William Scruggs Military Lodge UD was presented with its charter, in the prescence of twenty-two Lodge
Members at the Grand Lodge 117th Annual Session October 10-13, 1983 at Springfield, Illinois, under the leadership of Most
Worshipful Brother Levi L. Rose, Most Worshipful Grand Master; Right Worshipful Brother Melvin Frierson, Deputy Grand
Master; Right Worshipful Brother Archie C. Senter, Grand Senior Warden; Right Worshipful Brother James Gayles, Grand
Junior Warden; and Right Worshipful Brother James F. Clarke, Grand Secretary. WIliam Scruggs Military Lodge UD became a
regular chartered lodge and registered on the rolls of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, State of Illinois and its

Illinois and its Jurisdiction that William Scruggs Military Lodge UD became official and permanently recorded on the rolls of the
Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, State of Illinois and its Jurisdictions, and known as:
William Scruggs Military Lodge No 147, empowered with all rights and privileges to assemble as a regular lodge and to act in
accordance with the established procedures, edits, constitution and by-laws of the Most Worsghipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge,
Free and Accepted Masons, State of Illinois and its Jurisdictions.
|The official installation ceremony of the officers designated in the charter were installed by Most Worshipful Brother Levi L. Rose,
Most Worshipful Grand Master, assisted by Right Worshipful Brother Archie C. Senter, Grand Senior Warden; Right Worshipful
Brother Henry Short, Grand Lecturer; and Worshipful Master Brother Raymond T. Tucker, District Deputy Grand Master, Rufus
Mitchell Lodge No. 107, and assisted by all the brothers present.
|Since inception, the brothers listed below have served as Worshipful Master and they have all made contributions to William
Scruggs Military Lodge No. 147 to ensure the name of honorable Brother William Scruggs for whom the lodge is named is
continuously held in the highest regards with dignity, respect, and honor.
